Birds’ Eye View: PREVIEW – Eagles-Commanders

The Philadelphia Eagles (9-0) are back at the Linc tonight for another primetime matchup. This time, this game is against division rival Washington Commanders (4-5).

They faced off earlier in the season, resulting in a 24-8 win and nine sacks on former Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz. Now, things look slightly different at the Commanders with Taylor Heinicke under center. The Eagles have faced Heinickie before.

Last season, the Eagles had a slow start versus this team in the primetime matchup at the Linc. With the way the team has had slow starts and finishes this season, but still finding ways to win, I don’t doubt that might be the case tonight.

The Eagles can succeed in this game just like they have in others this season. With minimal injuries and a home game, there’s no reason why the Eagles wouldn’t win. Because Jordan Davis is out, the defense is going to have to have to step up. When Heinicke played against the Packers, one of the major issues that the team had was the lack of defense. This can’t happen with the Eagles just because they’re down a few players.

On the other side of the ball, the Commanders have their work cut out for them, but a win is not impossible. The team needs to dominate on both sides of the ball since the Eagles are putting together a complete team.

Defensively, the Commanders should not be afraid to blitz even in the absence of Chase Young. They also need to keep Hurts in the pocket and don’t let him make plays. Though Hurts is a mobile quarterback, he has been sacked a good amount of times this season.

Offensively, the Commanders need to hang onto the ball. Establishing a run game, utilizing the tight ends and especially utilizing Terry McLaurin will be huge against the Eagles. The Commanders win the turnover and time of possession battles, and they have the Eagles right where they want them.

Prediction: Eagles 31-20

I think the Eagles could have a slow start but it won’t matter because the team is at home and will still get it done and have a great game. I want to see DeVonta Smith get a touchdown for his birthday. I also see the Eagles defense getting it done just enough to hold the Commanders to a few field goals in addition to touchdowns.
