College and NBA basketball are in full swing, baseball is coming back and the NHL is approaching the playoffs.
Yet, the National Football League continues to stay relevant well into the offseason. They’ve managed to be a talking point without the games. Amid the monumental trades lies something else equally important for the NFL community: 2024 playing rule changes.
There are three rules that were either approved or amended for the 2024-25 playing season. Rule 15, Section 1, Article 1 was amended to protect a club’s ability to challenge a third ruling following one successful challenge.
The Competition Committee amended two rules: Rule 14, Section 5, Article 2 allows for an enforcement of a major foul by the offense prior to a change of possession in a situation where there are fouls by both teams, and Rule 12, Section 2 that eliminates the “drop-hip” tackle, noted by the committee as a “potentially dangerous tackling technique.”
Whether you’re a fan of these rules or not, the NFL has really started to feel like the center of attention without really trying. The NFL also announced four new clubs and five new markets in 2024. The clubs themselves aren’t new, rather where they gain global fandom is.
The five new markets include Argentina, Colombia, Japan, Nigeria and South Korea. The global expansion will in essence, give fans across the world a taste of American “football” – a less popular sport in comparison to soccer across the world.
Now, with the NFL Draft around the corner, we should not expect the NFL news to die down any time soon.
Needless to say, the NFL is that child who always needs the spotlight. It’s the sport that can manage to upstage other sports in the U.S. while, quite literally, taking the world by storm.
