In an effort to continue the 2016 nostalgia, the Denver Broncos are one game away from returning to the Super Bowl for the first time in a decade.
The Broncos had to play a hard fought game against the Buffalo Bills, who also had stakes in their trip to the Super Bowl since the “usual” AFC playoff teams are watching from home.
The two teams battled hard on Saturday, landing them in an anxiety-inducing overtime. After both teams failed to make it to the end zone to do anything, Bills quarterback Josh Allen threw a controversial interception that ultimately decided the winner of the game. The Broncos took the ball and marched downfield to kick a field goal, winning 33-30.
Two days later, Bills head coach Sean McDermott was fired, further depressing Allen and the team.
The Broncos also faced some bad news despite going to the AFC Championship. Quarterback Bo Nix suffered an ankle injury in overtime due to a poorly-called play where he didn’t need to run, but did.
This is a season-ending injury, meaning he has no chance to compete in the Super Bowl if the Broncos make it past the Patriots to get there. Jarrett Stidham, the Broncos backup and overnight savior, will step in.
If any quarterback knows about playing in a high-stakes game – especially against the Patriots – it’s former Eagles backup, Nick Foles.
Foles posted an uplifting message to the Broncos and their fans.
“Note for the Broncos and their fans: I know it has been an emotional 24 hours. I feel for Bo and the team, and I’m sending prayers for a strong recovery.” Foles said.
The second half of the message, however, is just pure gold.
Alluding to his 41-33 Super Bowl win over the Patriots in 2017, Foles had a bit of hope for Broncos fans as they approach the championship.
“A positive note going into the game versus the Patriots is that they struggle against backup QBs in championship-type games.” Foles said.
