When you see a poised, in control athlete, you would think that they come from strong mentors who paved the way and showed them how to get better at the game.
And when you’re defending Super Bowl champion and MVP quarterback Jalen Hurts, you’d definitely think that’s the case.
Well, it’s not.
Because in a recent press conference ahead of the Eagles’ season closer versus the Washington Commanders en route to the playoffs, Hurts discussed what it meant to be a leader and mentor to Tanner McKee, something Hurts didn’t get much of in the City of Brotherly Love.
“[Tanner’s] been a constant there for the last few years, and being able to go through changes together—processing things, taking in coaching, then going out and playing—that’s huge. I think that’s very beneficial.” Hurts said.
He pointed out how much it matters to have consistency in the quarterback room, especially when navigating changes together. Going through that process as a group, he said, builds trust and confidence. He also admitted he doesn’t always recognize the impact he’s had as a leader, largely because he never had that example himself—but it’s something he knows his teammate appreciates.
“Sometimes I don’t give enough credit to the example I’ve been for the room and for him, mostly because I didn’t have that myself. But I know it’s something he values. He’s a hell of a player.” Hurts said.
