I’ve figured it out, and this is real healthy for the Philadelphia Eagles longevity.
Where were you when the Philadelphia Eagles won their first Super Bowl? I was seated in a love seat opposite of my mother and father, watching the game bright eyed and bushy tailed as someone who was new to the game.
God what a time to be an Eagles fan, right? (Don’t worry, I suffered through the Chip Kelly era.)
But what really matters from this first Super Bowl win is how the Eagles acted the following season, and I remember it clear as day. The team coming into 2018-19 celebrated almost every touchdown. They were very confident and borderline cocky. And I get it, obviously, you’re the defending champs so you have this certain elevated thought that you are better than the rest of the league.
But you were only better last season.
We can pretend that things that were said from that season were false because it came from Golden Tate, but let’s be real. There were issues that really translated on the field – especially issues with Carson Wentz.
Also, let’s be honest here, the Eagles were struggling with injuries with Rodney McLeod and Jay Ajayi. All of these issues came to a head in Week 11 with a 48-7 loss in New Orleans where they had the largest loss by a defending Super Bowl champion in league history.
Honestly at one point, the Eagles were annoying to watch.
But what came after this is where we’re at today. Howie Roseman took charge and really turned the team around, starting with a polarizing second round, 53rd overall pick with Jalen Hurts.
A few more trades and additions over the coming years mixed with some coaching changes and the Eagles became a better version of the 2017 team.
The reason why the Eagles are treating their second Super Bowl win like it’s nothing is because they’re doing what they should be doing. It’s a new year and everyone is back to 0-0. The Eagles are notoriously an underdog team, so they’re going to remain in that mindset and never take anything for granted.
So, don’t expect anymore celebrations from the Eagles as Jalen Hurts is probably gonna plug his ears and close his eyes during the banner drop.
