Well isn’t someone two years too late?
Cleveland Browns co-owner Jimmy Haslam said on Monday that the team’s trade for quarterback Deshaun Watson was a “huge swing-and-miss.”
Watson joined the team in the height of his sexual assault allegations, causing controversy across the National Football League for the lack of responsibility and consequences.
Watson’s only punishment? Suspended for half of one season, but came back in time to play against his old team, the Houston Texans (I see what you did there, NFL, you’re not slick.)
Since joining the Browns, Watson started only 19 games due to injuries and the suspension. He has one of the lowest quarterback ratings in the NFL.
“We thought we had the quarterback; we didn’t. And we gave up a lot of draft picks to get him, so we’ve got to dig ourselves out of that hole…[The trade] was an entire organization decision and it ends with Dee [Haslam] and I, so hold us accountable.” Haslam said.
The Browns hole is currently the size of $46 million in each of Watson’s remaining two seasons.
Moving forward, the Browns are not necessarily concerned with finding “the” quarterback in this year’s draft.
“It would be great if we could get ‘the quarterback,’ but we’re not going to force it,” Haslam said. “We’re going to be patient and we’re going to try to accumulate as many really good football players as we can.”
